Not a willpower problem
Why can't my child put their phone down? And what actually changes it.
Short version: two design decisions are doing most of the work, and neither of them is a fact about your child. The first is that the feed has no bottom — it builds the next post as you approach it, so nothing ever tells them they are finished. The second is that the reward arrives unpredictably — and a reward you cannot predict keeps a behaviour going far longer than one that arrives every time. Because of two things built into the software, and one thing that is not true about your child. Start with the first design decision: the feed has no bottom. A book has pages. A programme ends and the credits roll. A feed loads more as you approach the end, which means there is never a moment where the thing itself says you are done now. Every stop has to be an act of will, performed at a moment the design specifically declines to provide.
That is not a small difference. The older things did a share of the stopping for us — the page break, the last episode, the bottom of the newspaper column. Remove them and all of that work transfers onto a twelve-year-old, continuously, with no natural place to put it down.
The second decision is that the reward is unpredictable. Pull to refresh and something might be there. Usually it is nothing much. Occasionally it is very good. That uncertainty is not a side effect of the internet being busy; it is the load-bearing choice in the whole design, and the next question is about why it works so well.
And the thing that is not true about your child: that any of this reflects their character. This software is built by large, well-resourced teams working against engagement targets — things like how long a session runs, and how reliably someone comes back tomorrow. Retention is a job title, a team, and a number somebody presents on a slide. Your eleven-year-old is not losing to their own weakness. They are losing to somebody’s quarterly target, which is a completely different problem, and a far more tractable one.
Are phones and apps really designed to be addictive?
They are designed to be hard to stop, and that much is not a theory or an accusation — you can see it in the thing itself. Infinite scroll removes the ending. Autoplay starts the next thing before anyone has decided to watch it, which quietly makes continuing the default and stopping the action that requires effort. A red badge manufactures a small unfinished task out of nothing. A streak counter attaches a price to missing one day. Each of those is a deliberate choice, and each one deletes a decision point where a person might otherwise have stood up and left the room.
There is one more, and it is older than any of the software it now lives in. It sits behind pull-to-refresh, and it has a proper name in behavioural psychology: intermittent reinforcement — a reward that arrives on some attempts and not others, on no schedule you can learn. Reward a behaviour every single time and it becomes routine and slightly dull. Reward it unpredictably and the behaviour proves much harder to shake — it carries on well after the rewards have dried up. That is textbook operant conditioning. The purest version of it, where every individual attempt is its own little lottery, is a variable-ratio schedule — which is exactly how a slot machine pays out, and the gesture is even the same: reach, pull, wait, see.
So the careful version of the answer is this. The pull is engineered, the mechanism behind it is old and extremely well understood, and it works perfectly well on adults with fully developed self-control. If you have ever refreshed something twice inside a minute while knowing there would be nothing new, you have already run the experiment on yourself. The second activity below just lets you run it on purpose.
Is my child addicted to their phone?
This is usually the question underneath the other questions, so it deserves a straight answer rather than a hedge: we cannot tell you, and neither can any article. Addiction is a clinical judgement about one specific person, made by someone qualified who has actually met them. Nobody writing on a website is in a position to make it about your child, and a page that offers you a checklist to settle it is overreaching.
What can be said without guessing is that the compulsion loop is real, it was built deliberately, and being caught in it is the ordinary and entirely expected result of using the product exactly as designed. It is not evidence of a weak character, a defect in your child, or a failure of parenting somewhere back in year six. It works on adults too, which is the clearest possible sign that it was never a question of willpower.
The more useful question — and the one you can act on this week — is narrower: what is it costing? Is it sleep. Is it that they are rarely in a room with the rest of you any more. Is it that being asked to stop now produces distress out of all proportion to what was interrupted. Those are not signs of anything in particular, and they are not a checklist wearing a disguise — they are just the costs you can see in your own house. You can watch them over a fortnight and describe them in plain sentences, without needing a label for any of it, and without having to settle what screens do to children in general. And if what is worrying you actually sits underneath the phone rather than inside it — their mood, their sleep, how things are going with friends — that is worth raising with your GP. Not because a screen caused it; that is a genuinely contested question and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Because those things deserve attention on their own terms.
The practical relief is that the answer barely changes what you do next. The changes in the last question are the same changes either way. You do not need a diagnosis to move the charger out of the bedroom.
How do I reduce screen time for a teenager?
Move the fight first. Every night that you argue about the phone, the contest is you versus your child — and that is a contest you have to win again tomorrow, and the night after, at the exact hour when everyone in the house has the least left to give. The version that holds is the two of you versus a design. At eleven to thirteen that reframe tends to land fast — children this age are quick to spot anything that looks like being played, and quick to object to it. With an older teenager it takes longer to earn, and it is still the only framing worth having: the opponent is the design, and the two of you are on the same side of it. Show them the mechanism rather than describing it, and a good number of them get indignant on their own behalf, which is a far better ally than compliance.
Then change what they meet, instead of asking them to resist it. Roughly in order of what they buy you for what they cost:
Where the device sleeps. Charging happens in the kitchen overnight, for everyone in the house, including you. This one default takes the phone out of the room for the hours when nobody else in the house is awake, and asks nobody to be strong at eleven at night. Notifications off — all of them, not just the irritating ones; every ping is an interruption whose timing somebody else chose. Greyscale, which strips out the saturation that thumbnails are colour-graded to compete on. The app off the home screen, so opening it costs a search instead of a reflex — small friction, applied at the exact moment the reflex fires. App timers, which simply put back the bottom that the feed removed.
Two things about how you do it, and they matter more than which one you pick. Do it with them, on their phone, while they watch — a setting changed behind their back gives them something to fight that is not the design. And pick one. One change that is still standing in a month beats five that collapse by Thursday. Confiscation is worth naming honestly, because most of us have reached for it: it is not a design change, it works for exactly as long as you are holding the phone, and it spends the alliance you need for everything else on this list.

Then: the reward that might not come
Two machines and twenty pulls to spend between them however you like. One pays a little on every single pull; the other pays nothing most of the time and occasionally pays big. It keeps count of which one you kept reaching for.

2Take all twenty in whatever mix you fancy — the only instruction is to pull whichever one you actually feel like pulling.
3At the end it shows you your own split, and how rarely the Surprise machine actually paid out. The gap between those two numbers is the entire mechanism.
Now: change the design, not the child
The same phone, with five switches — the pings, the colour, the one-tap access, the autoplay, the missing bottom. Flip them and watch the app’s grip fall away without anybody having to be strong-willed about anything.
