Why is the sky orange? And how to explain it to a five-year-old.

Why is the sky blue?

Sunlight looks white, but it is really every colour mixed together. Air is not empty either — it is packed with molecules far too small to see. When sunlight runs into them, the short, blue wavelengths get knocked sideways much more than the long, red ones. Physicists call that Rayleigh scattering. The blue light ends up bouncing around the whole sky and arriving at your eyes from every direction at once, so the dome above you reads blue.

It is not the ocean reflecting upwards — the sky in the middle of a desert is just as blue, and so is the sky above a plane at 30,000 feet.

Why does the sky turn orange at sunset?

Nothing about the sunlight changes at sunset. What changes is how much air it has to cross. With the sun overhead, its light takes a short path straight down to you. With the sun low on the horizon, that same light travels through a far longer stretch of atmosphere — long enough that almost all of the blue has already been scattered away sideways before it can reach you. The long reds and oranges survive the trip, and that is what is left to look at.

Extra dust, smoke or haze in the air scatters even more of the short wavelengths, which is why the most spectacular orange skies often follow a dusty, smoky or hazy day.

How do I explain this to a five-year-old?

Keep the order: all the colours, then bumping, then the longer path at bedtime. Here is a version that works out loud:

“Sunlight looks white, but it is really all the colours hiding together. The air is full of tiny, tiny bits — way too small to see. When sunlight bumps into them, the blue bounces all over the place, and that is why the sky is blue. At bedtime the sun is way down low, so its light has to squeeze through a whole lot more air to get to us. The blue bounces away before it can arrive. The orange makes it all the way. That is why the sky goes orange.”

Then let them do it instead of just hearing it: ask which colour bounces and which colour makes it all the way, and let them move the sun themselves.
