Why do we have day and night? And how to explain it to a child.

Short version: the Earth is spinning, all the time, like a very slow top. When your side is turned toward the Sun it is daytime; when it has turned away it is night. The Sun is not going anywhere — we are the ones moving. Why do we have day and night?

The Earth turns all the way around once roughly every 24 hours. It is spinning right now, carrying you with it, at a speed you cannot feel because everything around you — the ground, the air, your house — is moving at exactly the same speed.

The Sun only ever lights the half of Earth that happens to be facing it. That lit half is having daytime. The other half is in its own shadow, and that is night. As the planet keeps turning, your patch of ground is carried out of the light and back into it again, over and over.

Does the Sun actually rise and set?

No — and this is the mix-up almost everyone carries into adulthood. The Sun does not travel across our sky. The Earth rotates toward the east, so the Sun appears to come up over the eastern horizon, cross overhead, and disappear in the west. What is really moving is the ground under your feet, turning you toward the Sun in the morning and away from it in the evening.

There is a second mix-up worth heading off, because it sounds just as reasonable: day and night are not caused by the Earth going around the Sun. That trip takes a whole year and it is what gives us the seasons. Day and night come from the spin, not the orbit — two different motions happening at once.

How do I explain it to a child?

Keep the order: the Earth spins, then only half can be lit at a time, then we turn into the light and out of it. Here is a version that works out loud:

“The Earth is spinning, very slowly, all the time — even right now. The Sun can only shine on one side of it at once, like a torch pointed at a ball. When our side is turned toward the Sun, it is daytime for us. When the spinning carries us round to the other side, the light cannot reach us, and that is night. The Sun never went anywhere. We turned away from it.”

Then do it rather than say it. Turn the lights off, hold a torch steady, and let them slowly spin an orange or a tennis ball with a sticker on it for your house. Ask them to stop it at their own bedtime. The moment the sticker rotates out of the beam is the moment the idea lands — and it lands harder because they moved it themselves.
